I dropped AT&T.

at-t-logo.jpg

I haven’t owned a lan line in several years for three reasons:

1. I primarily use my cellphone because I’m almost never at home.

2. Lan line bills fluctuate too much.

3. No more telemarketers.

It got to a point where it didn’t make any damn sense to have a telephone and an answering machine sitting on my desk collecting dust while throwing $55 a month out of the window just to  have a lan line while simultaneously spending between 70 to 150 dollars a month on a cellphone bill. Furthermore, Bellsouth has always been notorious for ballooning my statements with hidden costs and FCC charges and all other kinds of unecessary garbage. No matter what “calling plan” I chose to go with my bill would always go from reasonable right back to damn near ridiculous, so bye-bye lan line.

When I decided to have internet in my home I opted instead for  phone  service  from a subsidiary phone company that had fixed rates. Sure my bill stayed the same every month but dial up got to be pretty slow. It was perhaps another year or two  before cable companies started offering high speed internet service so I could happily once again drop my lan line and surf the net in peace. Once again things were fine until I decided to make another career move and relocate to South Florida.

For some reason all of the major cable service providers were blocked out of the area where I live by some 2nd rate cable company that everyone in the area had foolishly agreed to sign a contract deal on. This left me with no other choice but to go back to paying for a lan line. For years I had hated Bellsouth with a passion and detested having to contact them again to re-establish service with them until I found out about the “new” AT&T.  They (AT&T) had this new promotion where if you open a lan line with them you can get Direct TV at a discount and free installation. Sounded like a good idea at the time and I had no other choice seeing as after further research the contract agreement with the 2nd rate cable service couldn’t be gotten out of. Okay, so I have high speed internet and Direct TV. Woopty doo.

Things were great until one day a week went by and I didn’t check the mail in my mailbox due to putting in long hours at the office. I pulled my mail at the end of the week and, low and behold, there’s a bill from AT&T saying that I owed them $237.98 immediately or risk termination of service. Okay, so I called up to pay off the bill when the phone representative said the total amount due was $465.80! I’m stunned because, first of all, there’s no mention of owing over 400 dollars in the original statement. Secondly, I’m wondering how I would owe AT&T over 400 dollars when I had just started service with them two months ago and only used the lan line for internet service? I mean, damn, I don’t even own a home phone, so there were no outgoing or incoming calls. The cost of having high speed internet and basic service should have been the same rate.

I figured to myself I must have done something wrong and will recieve a bill later, so I paid the entire balance online, thinking my service would quickly be restored - no such luck. The first AT&T representative told me my phone service would be restored by midnight.  That was a lie. When I called again and updated the 2nd representative on my dilemna he said my service would be restored the following day. Another damn lie. I sat on hold for a total of two days while I was passed around from one representative to the next, each with their own lies and flimsy explanations. The 5th representative told me a service technician would have to re-activate my service from the telephone pole and would be at my home the following week to restore my service. That was unacceptable - a total of one week had already passed where I had paid the total balance for my service to be restored yet I had no service. Finally, I told the 5th representative to cancel my service. After having been lied to for 6 days and having had an unexplained 460 dollar bill thrown in my face I decided to just break even with those fools and call it a day. 3 weeks later I recieved a refund, a 50 dollar check, in the mail from AT&T, for what reason I don’t know why. This past Saturday I checked my email and recieved another e-bill from AT&T  stating that I owed them another 429 dollars.

Thank you, AT&T, for such substandard service in my three months of being a paying customer. You can believe that after such diplorable service that I will never own another lan line again for the rest of my living days on planet Earth. I don’t blame you for your dastardly deeds of unexplained fees that appear out of nowhere. I blame myself for not having the patience to wait for the right constituents to work their way out of the contract with the second rate cable company, which opened the doors to more reputable cable providers. I also blame myself for not having learned my lesson the first time around through Bellsouth when I recieved similar substandard service. Nevertheless, I will forever be an adversary of AT&T.

Yeah, AT&T is a horrible company. I gave my landline after only 3 months, when I was quoted $29 a month plus a few fees that would put at at $37 or so. Lo and behold, my true bill ends up being $55. Fuck that bullshit, I canceled as fast as I could. For some reason they issued me two refund checks, both for the same amount. You better believe I'm chasing both of them to get some of my stolen money back.
